Post-Operative Wound Care After Anal Surgery

Recovering Comfortably and Safely

All you need to know...

After undergoing anal surgery for piles (haemorrhoids), anal fissure, or anal fistula, proper wound care is essential to ensure a smooth recovery, prevent complications, and promote healing. At Assana Colorectal and Gut Wellness Clinic, we prioritize comprehensive aftercare to support you every step of the way.

General Guidelines for Post-Operative Wound Care

Keep the Area Clean and Dry:

Gently clean the surgical area with warm water after each bowel movement.

Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing; instead, pat dry with a soft towel.

Sitz Baths:

Soak the anal area in warm water for 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times a day.

This helps reduce pain, swelling, and promotes wound healing.

Manage Pain and Discomfort:

Take prescribed pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications as directed by your surgeon.

Use over-the-counter ointments or medicated pads to soothe irritation, if recommended.

Dietary Adjustments:

Stick to a high-fiber diet to ensure soft stools and prevent straining during bowel movements.

Drink plenty of water (at least 8–10 glasses daily) to stay hydrated and support digestion.

Hygiene Practices:

Change dressings regularly if advised by your surgeon.

Avoid tight clothing that can irritate the surgical site.

Activity Restrictions:

Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for at least 1–2 weeks post-surgery.

Light walking can help improve circulation and support healing.

Specific Tips for Each Condition

Piles (Haemorrhoids)

Expect mild bleeding or discharge for a few days; this is normal.

Use a cushion or soft seating to avoid pressure on the surgical site.

Anal Fissure

Apply any prescribed topical ointments (e.g., nitroglycerin or calcium channel blockers) to aid in relaxation of the anal sphincter.

Avoid prolonged sitting; take short breaks to stand and move around.

Anal Fistula

Keep the wound drainage area clean to prevent infection.

Follow your surgeon’s instructions on packing the wound, if applicable.

Signs to Watch For

Contact your surgeon immediately if you experience:

Excessive bleeding or persistent drainage from the wound.

Severe pain that isn’t relieved by medication.

Signs of infection: fever, increased redness, swelling, or foul-smelling discharge.

Difficulty passing urine or stool.
